Alabama Power has awarded a $10,000 grant to a local non-profit as they attempt to transition from record keeping by hand to a system that is fit for the digital age.

According to the Daily Mountain Eagle, the generous grant was given to Dora’s Mission of Hope, a non-profit organization that provides clothing and food to less fortunate families in Walker County.

The grant will allow Dora’s Mission of Hope to purchase a digital technology system for record keeping purposes. Currently, all of the organization’s record keeping is done on paper.

Mission of Hope Director Lori Abercrombie said that it takes her a whopping 25 hours a week to complete all of the organization’s paperwork by hand. Now that they have gone digital with their record keeping, she will finally have more time to give back to the community.

“There’s so many things that we have to track as far as our families … and being able to put this in a computer system and generate these programs [is going to] help us help our people better,” Abercrombie said.

About 63% of high net worth donors cite “giving back to the community” as a primary motivation for giving, and this is certainly true in the case of Alabama Power.

In fact, this grant is just one of many that will come from Alabama Power’s Elevate Grant Program. The utility’s website describes Elevate as a “way to empower non-profits by providing funds for unique, replicable, community-centered projects and by providing capacity-building workshops and additional networking opportunities.”

According to the Montgomery Advertiser, Alabama Power is going above and beyond Elevate this holiday season to help the local community.

Employees from their South Division and South Customer Service Center recently delivered gifts to Brantwood Children’s Home and Friendship Mission’s Women and Children Shelter, both in Montgomery.

“We were made aware of children at both locations that were not going to have a gift to open Christmas morning,” said Latonia Tisdale, President of Alabama Power’s Southern Division APSO.

“We made a call to employees to fill the wish lists of the children and every request was met. Today was special because we know the happiness those gifts will bring kids on Christmas morning,” Tisdale added.

As for the grant to Dora’s Mission of Hope, the non-profit is also being given a $5,000 “challenge grant” that they will receive upon raising $5,000 of their own next year.
